Each morning a complimentary breakfast of fresh croissants and reputedly the City’s strongest coffee and brewed tea (no tea-bags) are served in the downstairs Parlor. There is a cheerful buzz about the service creating a warm café atmosphere– a civilized start to the day.

After exploring the sights of the City or unwinding after a day of work, guests wander back to The Golden Gate Hotel in the afternoon for complimentary Tea and Cookies in the Parlor. People often linger until dusk, striking up conversations with other guests, relaxing on the antique sofa with Pip, the house cat, and writing postcards in the late afternoon light.

Well behaved healthy pets with appropriate vet certification (rabies shots, etc.) are welcome at the hotel. There is a one-time pet fee to join “Pip’s Club”. A caveat: they may not be left alone in the room while the guest is away from the hotel and of course must be friendly towards humans and other animals.

Back in 1913 when our hotel was built, families did not generally travel as they do today (i.e. no chain hotels with huge rooms and two king-size beds ). Our rooms are 1913 size, thus families traveling with children will generally require two rooms. However we have one queen-bedded room with private bath that interconnects with a twin-bedded room that is popular with our family guests. If traveling with an infant we also have cribs available. Please call for more specific accommodation needs.

The Inn was built in 1913 as the trauma of the 1906 Earthquake was fading and the young city was reaching out to the world with the creation of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal and showcasing the rise of San Francisco from the earthquake’s devastation.

The Golden Gate Hotel was originally planned as a modest hotel for business travelers, together with the growing numbers of tourists traveling from the East Coast to visit the fabled land of sunshine in California. Artifacts from this era such as the Murphy Beds no longer exist, however the Claw Foot tubs and “Pillbox” commode tanks in many of the rooms happily remain.

In 1984, after living and working throughout the World, always in the hospitality profession, we settled down to create the kind of hotel we looked for on our own travels - comfortable and charming, full of flowers, perfectly located, and serving a great cup of coffee! With the Golden Gate Hotel we reached our dream.
Our amazing staff delight in anticipating your needs and exceeding your expectations.  Our aim is for you to leave your heart - not just in San Francisco, but more specifically - at The Golden Gate Hotel
